Joomla is a powerful award-winning Content Management System (CMS) that enables very efficient and structured website design. For the designer, development time is greatly reduced by Joomla's modular design and logical content management structure. For the website owner, using the Joomla CMS drastically shortens the learning curve required to get started using it compared to the time it would have taken with straight html. This ease of use for the end user is right at the very top of the list of the many benefits of the Joomla CMS, but there are many more good reasons as well.

Another reason why Joomla has become so popular is the fact that it is 'open source'. Being 'open source' means that there are no licensing fees associated with the Joomla core system like there normally are with other commercial software packages. Also, unlike commercial software, 'open source' literally means that the 'source' code is freely available to examine or modify. Joomla is supported by an active community of programmers, developers, webmasters, and users. The forum on Joomla.org has over 200,000 members all providing supprt and input. Having access to the source code makes it possible to create add-ons and extensions which greatly increase the functionality and power of the CMS. You can find free extensions that add everything from calenders and weather modules to forums, blogs, photo galleries, and maps; just to name a few.

In the past, making updates to your website usually required hours of coding and either hiring, or keeping on staff, an actual computer programmer to write the new code. With Joomla even a novice with no programming experience at all can easily learn to use the interface to update/add/remove articles, add/modify banners, add/remove/modify content and perform a host of other duties depending on which extensions have been installed. There are over 4400 third party extensions already available for Joomla and new ones are being added all the time.

Owned an Atari 800 with 16 kilobytes of ram and a 6502 8-bit processor that ran at 1.7 MHz, had no hard drive and a 5 1/4 inch floppy fisk that stored just 180 Kilobytes of data. Of course there was no Internet back then but there was dial up bulletin boards that one could connect to at 300 baud! lol.
